What is the best way to split gas costs on a road trip?
Calculate the complete shared trip cost first, agree who is paying, and then divide only the eligible costs among those people. If passengers travel different portions, split by route segment instead of dividing the full journey equally.
How do I calculate gas money between friends?
Multiply distance by fuel consumption per 100 km, divide by 100, and multiply by the price per litre. Add agreed tolls, parking and extras, then divide the eligible total using the group's chosen payer rule; the free calculator performs these steps.
Should the driver pay for gas too?
Include the driver if everyone is sharing the outing equally. Exclude the driver only when the passengers have agreed to cover the journey in return for the driving.
How do you split fuel if passengers travel different distances?
Divide the route into segments where the passenger group changes and split each segment only between the people present. DriveSplit Pro can record pickup and drop-off ranges during a GPS-tracked journey; planned trips can be calculated leg by leg. See the worked distance-based example.
Can I include tolls and parking?
Yes. Add tolls, parking and other agreed shared expenses to the energy cost before allocating the total. Keep personal purchases separate.

How the journey is calculated
Can DriveSplit calculate EV charging costs?
Yes. For a battery-electric trip, DriveSplit multiplies distance by kWh per 100 km, divides by 100, and applies the price per kWh before adding shared extras. Plug-in hybrids can combine fuel and electric portions when both inputs are available.
Are the results exact?
They are estimates until you replace estimated inputs with actual values. Weather, traffic, route, vehicle load and driving style can change consumption, so check receipts and final expenses before settling up.
Can I calculate miles instead of kilometres?
Yes in the web calculator. It converts miles to kilometres before applying L/100 km or kWh/100 km consumption.
Access and privacy
The app, location and sharing
Does DriveSplit require an account?
No. DriveSplit has no developer-operated account system. Most working trip and vehicle data stays on the iPhone; limited requested online services are described in the privacy policy.
Is DriveSplit free?
The public fuel and EV calculator is free and requires no account. The iPhone app has free functionality and optional Pro features; current storefront pricing and any trial eligibility are shown by Apple in the app.
Does DriveSplit track my location?
Only for features you request. Pro tracked trips use precise location while active, and nearby fuel-price searches send latitude, longitude, radius and fuel type to DriveSplit's Cloudflare endpoint. Planned estimates and manual prices remain available without location access.
Can I share the result with passengers?
Yes. Saving a result creates a temporary share link that can show the selected trip breakdown and payment state. The record expires after seven days, cannot currently be revoked early from the app, and is excluded from the sitemap with noindex instructions. Anyone with the link can view it until expiry.
Does the public calculator save my inputs?
No. Its calculation runs in the browser, and DriveSplit does not save or transmit the distance, consumption, price, expenses or passenger count you enter.
Where do nearby Spanish fuel prices come from?
DriveSplit's Cloudflare endpoint uses official Spanish government fuel-price data to return compatible stations around the requested point. The request includes location, radius and fuel type; official prices may be delayed or differ from the pump.
Availability
Is DriveSplit on iPhone?
Yes. DriveSplit is available for iPhone on the official App Store listing. Apple also lists iPad compatibility; check that listing for current system requirements and availability.
