Different legs, separate splits
If people join or leave during the journey, calculate each leg separately. It is clearer than charging everyone for distance they did not travel.

What costs belong in the split?
Usually: energy used for the journey, tolls and shared parking. Add other costs only when the group agreed to share them.
Fuel receipts are clear, but filling the whole tank is not necessarily the journey cost. If the trip used only part of a tank, calculate the litres used from distance and consumption or compare the fuel level before and after.
How much should friends pay for petrol?
Use the trip's estimated or measured fuel cost, not an arbitrary amount. A transparent calculation helps everyone check the distance, consumption, fuel price and paying count.
Should vehicle wear be included?
For informal trips, groups often split only direct expenses. For regular lifts, long journeys or a rented vehicle, the group may also agree on wear, rental or insurance costs. State any allowance clearly and add it as an extra rather than hiding it in the fuel price.
How do shared-trip links work?
