From distance to charging cost

Electric vehicles use the same distance-and-consumption pattern as combustion cars, but the units are kWh and price per kWh.

Which electricity price should I use?

Use the price from the charger or tariff you expect to use. Home, workplace, rapid and destination charging can have very different prices.

If you will use several tariffs, calculate each charging portion separately or enter a weighted average. Free charging should only be counted when it is genuinely available for this journey.

What consumption figure should I enter?

Use a recent real-world figure from the car when possible. Motorway speed, low temperatures, cabin heating, headwinds, hills and vehicle load can all raise kWh/100 km. A conservative figure is more useful than an optimistic catalogue value for route budgeting.

Battery percentage is not the same as energy

A percentage tells you how much of the battery is available, not the journey cost. To convert a percentage change to energy, multiply usable battery capacity by the percentage used. For example, 40% of a 60 kWh usable battery is 24 kWh.

What about charging losses?

Energy billed at the charger can be higher than energy stored in the battery. If your consumption figure comes from the dashboard, consider the charger efficiency and preconditioning. If it comes from a wall charger measurement over similar trips, those losses may already be represented.

Plug-in hybrid journeys

A PHEV needs separate fuel and electricity calculations when both modes are used. DriveSplit models them separately only when both consumption figures and both energy prices are available; it does not invent missing electric use. For a manual estimate, calculate each distance portion independently and add the results.

How much does it cost to drive an EV 300 km?

At 18 kWh/100 km, a 300 km drive uses about 54 kWh. At €0.35/kWh, that is €18.90 before tolls, parking or other extras.

Should I use miles or kilometres?

Either works for distance. The calculator converts miles to kilometres before applying kWh/100 km consumption.

Does the calculator include charging stops?

No. It estimates energy cost, not route timing or charger availability. Plan charging stops separately and enter the price you expect to pay.

Can passengers split EV charging costs?

Yes. Add the journey's charging cost and shared extras, then divide by the people paying. Agree first whether the driver is included.
